Medal of Honor: Sal, a Real Soldier

 

October 25, 2007 - What to do? Sal could hardly think. As he walked with some fellow soldiers back to the outpost, the night suddenly erupted around them.

There were more bullets in the air than stars in the sky, everywhere - in front, behind, below, above. Everyone hit the dirt in an instant, almost everyone. Where were Josh and Frank?

No it couldn't be, but as he peered through the darkness, Frank had just dropped out of sight. He had been right there racing back with the squad in front and suddenly he was gone.

Racing through the curtain of lead, he managed to reach Frank. But a second later, he noticed that the direction of fire had changed. He called back two more members of his squad, Kaleb and Garrett, to avoid being completely cut off.

The fire was letting up. What was going on? In the time it took him to get to Frank, his comrades had responded. The enemy was on the run. But Josh was still missing!

As he continued forward he could just make out three figures hurrying off into the darkness, two treading heavily, and one... being dragged. He dashed after them determined not to leave his best friend in enemy hands. When he finally reached him, it was already too late. But Josh wouldn't die alone

November 16, 2010 - The memories hadn't faded. Life continued. They had moved on, but Josh hadn't.

It just didn't seem right. How could he celebrate? How could he receive the Medal of Honor, when so many others had given so much more - their lives. He had just done his duty, fighting for his friends and his country.
