A stroke of Luck

This can't be happening I groaned as I threw up my hands and leaned back in the chair. Michigan hadn't won against Ohio State since 2003. Here we were, clearly better (I admit a certain bias), and it looked like 2011 was going to be the same all over again.

The game was close, and Michigan couldn't seem to pull away. Denard Robinson finally scored what seemed to be the clinching touchdown, only to have it taken away after a video review. Then two penalties! It was third and a mile from the goal line! What was going on?!

Here I was trying to enjoy the game with a few fellow seminarians, but we just needed a stroke of luck. Before the television went into commercials, I was surprised to see that Stanford rated #6.

For them, it seemed like a stroke luck (no offense intended). And it was in fact, Andrew Luck! As their star quarterback, he was rated the #4 pro-style quarterback out of high school. By the end of his sophomore season he was projected by some to be the first selection in the NFL 2011 draft.

But Luck wasn't in that draft. He decided to finish his college degree with two more years at Stanford. Why didn't he take the sure option to money and fame?

Well in a recent interview, it became quite obvious, though not so much by what he said. He was surrounded by supporters trying to get their microphone in place when suddenly excused himself. He rushed over to the door of the Stanford athletic building.

He held the door open for a woman with her hands full, and was glad to give her directions to the restroom when she asked. It wasn't earth shaking, but it showed the kind of man he was.

Stanford, Michigan - maybe we could all use a bit of Luck.
